Most appraisers are generalists – we take assignments as they come along, and learn what we have to learn about
an industry or a market in order to understand what’s going on. Usually, this approach works satisfactorily – the basic
principles of valuation are pretty much the same from industry to industry, with a few exceptions. The market data is
different for each industry, but the methods of analyzing it are usually the same.

Nevertheless, an appraiser who has spent years working in an industry and who has done 20, or 50, or even 100
valuations in that industry, is going to have an advantage. He is going to know and understand better what the
conditions in the industry are, and what they mean for his client. He will have a better feel for how each client
compares to others in the industry, and for each client’s particular strengths and weaknesses.

But, industry expertise is not enough – to give you a reliable valuation, an industry expert must also have a thorough
knowledge of valuation concepts and methods, and the tools and resources to do the job. BVG appraisers not only
have the training they need, they are backed up by the rest of the BVG team, and by BEAR’s software and
data resources.

Here are some of the industries in which BVG has in-depth experience, with links to the primary experts. If you don’t
see your industry, call our general number at 1-888-793-7295.
